Hatton Estate is a small property located in the Hawke’s Bay region, an area that produces New Zealand’s finest Bordeaux styled wines. Their vineyard and winery are situated in a sub region of Hawke’s Bay called Gimblett Gravels, an old, rocky riverbed that naturally produces low quantities of high quality grapes.
Winery Profile
Hatton Estate is a family owned and operated winery established in 1992 by two couples, John and Ngarita Rees and Michael and Colleen Daymond King.
John Rees has over 20 years of experience as a viticulturalist in the Gimblett Gravels sub region of Hawkes Bay. This experience has been instrumental in the development of the fourty acre Hatton Estate property. The rocky riverbed soils of Gimblett Gravels have inspired Michael and John to focus on Bordeaux varietals complimented by smaller plantings of Chardonnay and Syrah.
Hawkes Bay is located on the east coast of New Zealand’s North Island. A mountain range to the west protects this area from clouds and rain, transforming it into one of the sunniest areas on the North Island.
Michael Daymond King’s background is in financial planning and he oversees the sales and marketing efforts of the winery. Together, John and Michael work at producing wines that reflect “quality without compromise.”
Working exclusively with estate grown grapes, Hatton Estate produces three wines.
EC2 is an unoaked chardonnay that bears a striking resemblance to Chablis with it’s vivid Chardonnay fruit and layers of minerality. EC2 stands for Experimental Chardonnay 2 and also refers to the City of London’s postal code, Michael’s former workplace.
Tahi is a Bordeaux blend wine featuring Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. Aged for seventeen months, primarily in new French Oak, this wine showcases a
seamless combination of fruit and the distinctive Gimblett Gravels terroir. This wine is only made in selected vintages and in very small quantities.
Named after Hatton Estates artisan vignernon Carson Green, Carsons is also a Bordeaux blend that relies less on Cabernet Sauvignon and more on Cabernet Franc and Merlot. This combination results in a wine with earlier approachability than the Tahi and reflects the great success of these varietals in this area.
